Sustainability — Phinisi Wellness’s Environmental & Community Commitments

Sustainability & Community Impact

At Phinisi Wellness, we believe that true luxury is inseparable from responsibility. Our voyages take place in some of the most ecologically precious and culturally rich locations on Earth, including the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Komodo National Park and the global epicenter of marine biodiversity, Raja Ampat. We consider ourselves custodians of these regions, and our commitment to sustainability and positive community impact is a core pillar of our identity, integrated into every aspect of our operations. This commitment is a key factor in our evaluation methodology for all partners.

Our 360° Sustainability Commitment

1. Marine & Environmental Conservation

We are passionate about protecting the pristine oceans we call our home.

  • Financial Contributions: We donate 2% of our net profits annually, split between the Komodo Survival Program and the Raja Ampat Marine Park Authority, to directly fund patrols, research, and conservation initiatives.
  • Active Reef Monitoring: Our PADI-certified dive team actively participates in the Coral Watch citizen science program, submitting reef health data after every voyage to help scientists monitor coral bleaching and recovery.
  • Strict No-Impact Policy: We enforce a strict no-touch, no-take policy for all marine interactions. Our guides provide comprehensive briefings on responsible snorkeling and diving etiquette to ensure the protection of delicate coral ecosystems.
  • Carbon Offsetting: We have partnered with a VERRA-certified Indonesian-based carbon offset provider to calculate the full carbon footprint of each wellness journey, from vessel fuel to guest flights. We then offset 150% of this footprint by investing in certified reforestation projects in Borneo.

2. Waste & Pollution Reduction

We are committed to leaving no trace but our wake.

  • Zero Single-Use Plastics: Our vessels are 100% free of single-use plastics. Guests are provided with personalized reusable water bottles. All bathroom amenities are in refillable, biodegradable containers, and provisions are sourced with minimal packaging.
  • Advanced Wastewater Treatment: Every phinisi in our fleet is equipped with a state-of-the-art wastewater treatment system that processes all black and grey water to a non-polluting standard, far exceeding government requirements.
  • Sustainable Sourcing: We use only reef-safe sunscreens and environmentally friendly cleaning products onboard.

3. Community Empowerment & Cultural Preservation

Our journeys are designed to create meaningful economic and social benefits for the local communities we visit.

  • Local Employment: Over 95% of our vessel crew members are hired from the local communities of Flores, Sulawesi, and West Papua. We provide them with competitive wages, comprehensive health insurance (BPJS), and ongoing professional training. This is a core value championed by our leadership.
  • Local Sourcing: We have a ‘local-first’ procurement policy. We purchase fresh produce from organic farms near Labuan Bajo, sustainably caught fish directly from local fishermen in Papuan villages, and artisan coffee from Flores. This injects money directly into the local economy.
  • Respectful Cultural Engagement: When we facilitate visits to traditional communities, such as the weavers of the Alor archipelago or the pearl farms of the Banda Islands, we do so in small, respectful groups. A significant portion of the fee is paid directly to the village cooperative to fund education and healthcare projects.

Our commitment to sustainability is an ongoing journey, not a destination. We continuously seek new ways to innovate and improve our practices, ensuring that the transformative power of a Phinisi Wellness experience extends to the beautiful environments and people of Indonesia.

Imagine the gentle lull of the waves against a sustainably crafted phinisi, the scent of the sea air mingling with the aroma of locally sourced spices, knowing that every detail of your journey supports the vibrant ecosystems and communities you encounter. This is the essence of luxury travel with Phinisi Wellness, where immersive experiences are meticulously balanced with a profound commitment to stewardship.

Empowering local communities through sustainable partnerships

Phinisi Wellness doesn’t just pass through these incredible regions; we become an integral part of their economic fabric. Our commitment extends to fostering genuine partnerships with local communities, ensuring that the benefits of luxury tourism are shared equitably and sustainably. This begins with employment: over 80% of our onboard crew and land-based support staff are Indonesian nationals, primarily hailing from the very islands we explore. From seasoned captains navigating treacherous currents to expert chefs preparing authentic regional cuisine, their invaluable local knowledge and skills are celebrated and fairly compensated, providing stable livelihoods in often remote areas.

Beyond direct employment, we prioritize sourcing provisions and services locally whenever possible,
